Life Cycle Assessment of an NMC Battery for Application to Electric Light-Duty Commercial Vehicles and Comparison with a Sodium-Nickel-Chloride Battery

Antonella Accardo et al.

Summary: The study found that the NMC111 battery has the highest environmental impacts during the production stage, with active cathode material, Aluminium, Copper, and energy use for battery production being the main contributors. However, during vehicle operation, the NMC111-BEV showed lower environmental impacts compared to the ZEBRA-BEV. Electric powertrains outperform diesel ones in terms of global warming, abiotic depletion potential-fossil fuels, photochemical oxidation, and ozone layer depletion, but diesel vehicles perform better in most other impact categories.

The development of techno-economic models for the assessment of utility-scale electro-chemical battery storage systems

Md Mustafizur Rahman et al.

Summary: The choice of energy storage system for stationary applications is largely determined by economic performance, with electro-chemical systems being suitable for transportation and portable uses. Techno-economic models were developed for five battery storage technologies, revealing varying costs depending on application scenarios and demonstrating lower costs with longer discharge durations.

Life Cycle Assessment of Stationary Storage Systems within the Italian Electric Network

Maria Leonor Carvalho et al.

Summary: The introduction of stationary storage systems into the Italian electric network is necessary to accommodate the increasing share of energy from non-programmable renewable sources and to reach progressive decarbonization targets. In this framework, a life cycle assessment is a suitable tool to assess environmental impacts during the entire life cycle of stationary storage systems, i.e., their sustainability. Results of a Li-ion battery entire life cycle assessment based on primary and literature data highlight the key aspects impacting environmental impacts and show the importance of data quality in obtaining reliable results.

The development of a techno-economic model for the assessment of the cost of flywheel energy storage systems for utility-scale stationary applications

Md Mustafizur Rahman et al.

Summary: Flywheel energy storage systems are seen as a promising alternative to electro-chemical batteries for short-duration utility applications, but research into their techno-economic performance for large-scale applications is limited. This study focuses on developing a bottom-up techno-economic model to design system components and evaluate the total investment cost and levelized cost of storage of 20 MW/5 MWh capacity flywheels for frequency regulation. Sensitivity analysis shows that the model results are highly dependent on factors like rotor material cost, discount rate, factor of safety, number of cycles per year, and tensile strength of the rotor material.
