Online capacity estimation of lithium-ion batteries with deep long short-term memory networks

Weihan Li et al.

Summary: There is a growing demand for modern diagnostic systems for batteries in real-world operation, especially for estimating their health status such as remaining capacity. A data-driven capacity estimation model using recurrent neural networks with long short-term memory capability has been developed for cells under real-world working conditions. This model is robust, can handle input noise, adapt to variations in input time series length, and generate viable estimation even with incomplete input data.

Impact of electrode porosity architecture on electrochemical performances of 1 mm-thick LiFePO4 binder-free Li-ion electrodes fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering

Rakesh Elango et al.

Summary: This research reports the fabrication of thick binder-free LiFePO4 electrodes with two different pore sizes and porosities using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) and templating approach. The study shows that the porosity architecture significantly affects the electrochemical performance, especially in samples with larger pores. The correlation between morphological properties and the rate capability performance is established, with capacity loss mainly attributed to Li-ion diffusion limitations.

Summary: A diagnostic technique is introduced for quantitatively estimating degradation modes in operating conditions, such as loss of lithium inventory and active material, using a simple heat generation model and heat transfer model with minimal temperature measurements. The technique shows accuracies in predicting electrode capacities, offset of a fresh cell, and loss of lithium and active material, making it suitable for online implementation in a battery management system.

Summary: The intentional application of interelectrode thermal gradients (ITGs) accelerates capacity loss in 35°C cells, with the directionality of the thermal gradient determining the degradation mode. Experimental results showed that when the positive electrode is warmer than the negative electrode, the capacity loss is 77%, while when the negative electrode is warmer, the capacity loss is 100%.

Evolution of initial cell-to-cell variations during a three-year production cycle

M. Schindler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the development of cells' capacity, internal resistance, and energy density over a time span of nearly three years for three different batches of the same cell. Significant differences in cell-to-cell variations between the batches were found, suggesting that BEV manufacturers should consider how they can counter the influence of these variations through an operating strategy to protect themselves against regress claims by customers in the long term.

Summary: The two-dimensional lithium distribution in graphite anodes of Li-ion batteries was probed non-destructively using neutron diffraction, revealing non-uniformities in the lithiation state of most cells. These non-uniformities were correlated to electrode configuration and materials, affecting the intrinsic state-of-charge distribution and potentially the aging behavior of the electrodes.
