Experimental study into the effect of the second-generation BBuE biofuel use on the diesel engine parameters and exhaust composition

Dariusz Kurczynski et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of second-generation biofuels, specifically BBuE, on exhaust gas composition from a diesel engine. Results showed that by powering the engine with BBuE, lower concentrations of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, particulate matter, and nitrogen oxides were achieved compared to using first-generation biofuel RME or diesel fuel DF. This suggests that new-generation biofuels emit fewer undesirable exhaust gas components into the atmosphere.

A vision of European biogas sector development towards 2030: Trends and challenges

Ulysse Bremond et al.

Summary: The future European Green Deal aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with a focus on decarbonizing the gas sector and developing biomethane. The biogas sector is shifting towards utilizing organic wastes and agricultural by-products as feedstocks, upgrading biogas to biomethane for various applications, and reducing subsidy schemes to increase sustainability and reduce production costs. This article identifies and discusses key improvement tracks for the biogas sector to ensure growth towards 2030 and beyond.

Agricultural biogas production: A regional comparison of technical parameters

B. Stuermer et al.

Summary: Renewable energy production has increased in Europe since the 2000s, with biogas plants playing a role in reducing CO2 emissions. However, differences in the numbers and management of biogas plants exist among countries and regions, influenced by legal framework conditions. These conditions impact the structure and technical performance of the biogas sector, as well as the regional and historical influences on plant operation modes. Failure to evolve due to legal constraints may lead to a decline in green power production from biogas plants, affecting renewable energy sources and climate protection targets.

Performance and emission evaluation of dual fuel CI engine using preheated biogas-air mixture

A. Vijin Prabhu et al.

Summary: By preheating the biogas-air mixture, it is possible to increase the efficiency and power of the engine, while reducing fuel consumption. However, it can also lead to an increase in CO2 and NOx emissions, but can reduce HC and CH4 emissions.

Effects of operating parameters on the performance, emission and combustion indices of a biogas fuelled HCCI engine

M. Feroskhan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the operation of a HCCI engine using simulated biogas and DEE as fuels, with a focus on performance, emissions, and combustion parameters. The research reveals that high biogas flow rates or methane content can effectively substitute DEE and provide significant energy input, while lower biogas flow rates and methane fractions lead to improved thermal efficiency and reduced HC emissions. Intake heating improves engine performance and emissions, although it may increase the tendency to knock, and manifold injection shows superior engine output compared to port injection.

Methane production enhancement of a family-scale biogas digester using cattle manure and corn stover under cold climates

W. E. Abd Allah et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that co-digestion of cattle manure and milled corn stover significantly increased the methane yield and performance of a family-scale biogas digester compared to anaerobic mono-digestion. The use of co-digestion resulted in higher daily, cumulative, and specific methane yields, as well as increased biogas energy production, under winter conditions.
