Glycemic control before admission is an important determinant of prognosis in patients with coronavirus disease 2019

Li Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that glycemic control before admission is associated with severity and mortality of COVID-19 patients, with poorly controlled blood sugar levels leading to higher rates of secondary respiratory infections and acute respiratory distress syndrome, resulting in a higher proportion of critically ill patients and non-survivors.

Hyperglycemia is Associated With Increased Mortality in Critically III Patients With COVID-19

Alon Y. Mazori et al.

Summary: The study revealed that critically ill COVID-19 patients without diabetes but with early-onset hyperglycemia are at a higher risk of in-hospital mortality, with elevated levels of inflammatory markers. Though limited by its design, the results suggest that a combination of elevated glucose and lactate may identify individuals at high risk for mortality from COVID-19.

Summary: Among diabetic patients infected with COVID-19, insulin therapy at home was significantly independently associated with increased mortality. Peak daily inpatient insulin requirements were also independently associated with increased inpatient mortality.

Summary: Undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, and de novo hyperglycemia are risk factors for critical COVID-19 outcomes. Early measurement of HbA1c is essential to assess individual risk considering the high rates of undiagnosed type 2 diabetes in Mexico.
