Common mistakes in ecological niche models

Neftali Sillero et al.

Summary: After teaching and reviewing manuscripts on ecological niche models, we found common mistakes such as treating presence-background modelling methods as pseudo-absence methods and confusing spatial autocorrelation with clustering of species records. Some errors arise from students' misunderstandings and are corrected before publication, while others can be found in published papers.

Using remotely sensed indicators of primary productivity to improve prioritization of conservation areas for top predators

Adrian Regos et al.

Summary: This study examines how the spatiotemporal variation in habitat quality for top predators, such as raptors, can be influenced by fluctuations in primary productivity, and whether incorporating this into habitat modeling improves predictions in space and time. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the intra- and interannual dynamics of primary productivity in determining habitat quality for top predators, and support the use of remotely sensed ecosystem functioning attributes to inform about habitat-quality dynamics in a cost-effective, standardized, and repeatable way.

SDM-CropProj - A model-assisted framework to forecast crop environmental suitability and fruit production

Salvador Arenas-Castro et al.

Summary: This study presents a model-assisted framework (SDM-CropProj) that combines multiple techniques to predict the environmental suitability of crops and forecast future crop production. Different evaluation metrics show that crop production is related to the model-predicted suitable area, allowing for future projections of total fruit production based on climate scenarios. The SDM-CropProj framework can assess potential pathways and trends in annual crop production due to changes in environmental suitability and crop distribution as a result of climate change.

Cross-scale monitoring of habitat suitability changes using satellite time series and ecological niche models

Salvador Arenas-Castro et al.

Summary: A cost-effective and sustainable framework for monitoring species-specific habitat changes across scales was developed using ecological niche models and satellite remote sensing data. Trend analysis showed decreasing habitat suitability for most species across regional and continental scales, with amphibians and reptiles being the most affected groups. The framework can detect changes in habitat suitability regardless of spatial scale, providing a promising tool for biodiversity monitoring and risk assessment.
