Passive -margin magmatism caused by enhanced slab-pull forces in central Tibet

Wei Dan et al.

Summary: The study reports on a ca. 239 Ma mafic dike swarm intruded in the Southern Qiangtang terrane, central Tibet, generated on the passive continental margin. The dikes are tholeiitic basalts with unique geochemical characteristics, coeval with a back-arc basin formation due to Paleo-Tethys oceanic slab rollback. Enhanced slab-pull forces from ocean-ridge subduction are proposed as an unrecognized mechanism for lower-plate passive-margin magmatism.

The supercontinent cycle

Ross N. Mitchell et al.

Summary: Over the past 2 billion years, three major supercontinents have been identified, representing self-organization in plate tectonics. Research indicates that the supercontinent cycle is intimately related to whole-mantle convection, serving as both an effect and a cause of mantle convection. Future studies will focus on which oceans close to create a supercontinent and how these predictions are linked to mantle convection.
