Human Fetal Liver Metabolism of Oxycodone Is Mediated by CYP3A7

Sara Shum et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that fetal liver microsomes metabolized oxycodone to noroxycodone via CYP3A7. Despite high expression of CYP3A7 in the fetal liver, its metabolism does not significantly contribute to the clearance of oxycodone in pregnant women, nor does it limit fetal exposure to the drug. Additionally, since CYP3A7 forms an inactive metabolite, the fetal liver metabolism is unlikely to affect fetal opioid activity.
