Presumption of guilt for T cells in type 1 diabetes: lead culprits or partners in crime depending on age of onset?

Alexia Carre et al.

Summary: Available evidence presents arguments both for and against a primary pathogenic role for T cells in human type 1 diabetes, with genetic susceptibility and histopathology supporting their role but functional arguments and clinical observations providing mixed results. Further research and technological advancements are needed to clarify the relative role of T cells in the disease process.
