Reduced brown adipose tissue activity during cold exposure is a metabolic feature of the human thrifty phenotype ?

Tim Hollstein et al.

Summary: This study found that thrifty individuals, who experience a greater decrease in 24-hour energy expenditure during short-term fasting, also have lower cold-induced brown adipose tissue activation. The reduced CIBA may explain the lower capacity for cold-induced thermogenesis and greater predisposition towards weight gain in individuals with a thrifty metabolism.

Efficacy and safety of low and very low carbohydrate diets for type 2 diabetes remission: systematic review and meta-analysis of published and unpublished randomized trial data

Joshua Z. Goldenberg et al.

Summary: Patients with type 2 diabetes adhering to a low carbohydrate diet for six months may experience remission of diabetes without adverse consequences. There were significant improvements in weight loss, triglycerides, and insulin sensitivity at six months, but these improvements diminished at 12 months. VLCDs were found to be less effective than less restrictive LCDs for weight loss at six months, but this was due to diet adherence.

Antihypertensive medication needs and blood pressure control with weight loss in the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT)

Wilma S. Leslie et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the safety and efficacy of replacing antihypertensive medications with a low-energy diet to induce weight loss for remission of type 2 diabetes. Results showed significant reduction in blood pressure, with some participants experiencing mild dizziness. It is safe to stop antihypertensives, but regular monitoring and potential reintroduction of medications may be necessary.
