The Electro-Fenton process is an effective method for removing organic pollutants in water, with its efficiency depending on the production rate of H2O2 and the anode material. The use of BDD film electrode in this process can significantly enhance its effectiveness.
Electro-Fenton process is one of the most popular electrochemical advanced oxidation process for removing persistent/toxic organic pollutants from water. The efficiency of this process depends on different parameters including the electrode material. The performance of this process depends mainly on the in situ production rate of H2O2, which generates hydroxyl radicals in the bulk solution via the Fenton reaction. Generally, carbonaceous materials provide high efficiency due to their ability to generate H2O2. Compared to the classical anodes, the development of BDD film electrode and its use as anode in electro-Fenton process significantly enhanced the effectiveness of this process. This review intends to present an overall description of the benefit provided by using BDD film anode in electro-Fenton process including advantages, drawbacks and application to the destruction of organic pollutants in water. The examples of outstanding results obtained thanks to use of this anode in electro-Fenton process are also thoroughly depicted.
