Nutritional guidelines for the management of insulin resistance

Giovanna Muscogiuri et al.

Summary: Obesity and its related comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes, are significant global public health issues. Insulin resistance in muscle and liver is the underlying pathophysiologic defect leading to obesity and predicting the onset of type 2 diabetes. Despite the well-recognized role of insulin resistance in metabolic diseases, there are currently no specific nutritional recommendations for managing this condition. An international panel of experts reviewed the literature on this topic and aimed to provide nutritional advice for managing insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and reactive hypoglycemia to prevent the progression or worsening of insulin resistance and, ultimately, type 2 diabetes.

Summary: Research suggests that a 6-week carbohydrate-restricted diet can significantly reduce postprandial glucose fluctuations, improve insulin secretion, and increase subjective satiety in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Gut microbiome changes induced by a diet rich in fruits and vegetables

Marie van der Merwe

Summary: Habitual dietary intake influences the species composition and functional output of the human gut microbiome, with a fruit and vegetable-rich diet associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases. These dietary components interact with the gut microbiome, selectively enriching specific microbial species and increasing microbial diversity. Understanding this interaction can lead to rational dietary manipulation for improved human health through disease prevention and treatment.

Efficacy and safety of low and very low carbohydrate diets for type 2 diabetes remission: systematic review and meta-analysis of published and unpublished randomized trial data

Joshua Z. Goldenberg et al.

Summary: Patients with type 2 diabetes adhering to a low carbohydrate diet for six months may experience remission of diabetes without adverse consequences. There were significant improvements in weight loss, triglycerides, and insulin sensitivity at six months, but these improvements diminished at 12 months. VLCDs were found to be less effective than less restrictive LCDs for weight loss at six months, but this was due to diet adherence.

The relationship between gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids and type 2 diabetes mellitus: the possible role of dietary fibre

Dominic Salamone et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota and its metabolites can influence various physiological mechanisms related to human health. Dietary fiber may play a key role in modulating the risk of metabolic diseases by affecting gut microbiota activity and SCFA production. Studies have explored the relationship between gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids, and glucose metabolism, discussing the potential mechanisms behind this association.

An optimal glycemic load range is better for reducing obesity and diabetes risk among middle-aged and elderly adults

Fengyi He et al.

Summary: This study found that moderate levels of glycemic load intake can reduce the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and diabetes, and are more consistent with macronutrient intake reference and adequate micronutrient intake. Therefore, the optimal glycemic load range was determined to be (85-100)/1000 kcal, rather than lower is better.

Dietary Fibre Modulates the Gut Microbiota

Peter Cronin et al.

Summary: Dietary fiber is crucial for nutrition and health, but modern dietary practices have led to a decrease in fiber consumption, potentially contributing to the rise of gut diseases. Changes in gut microbiota composition and function due to different types of dietary fiber could alter glucose and lipid metabolism.

Vitamin D in obesity and obesity-related diseases: an overview

Summary: There is a close relationship between low levels of vitamin D and obesity, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully clarified. Obesity may lead to low circulating levels of vitamin D, while low vitamin D levels may be involved in adipogenesis and the development of obesity.
