Creatinine filtration kinetics in critically Ill neonates

Danielle R. Rios et al.

Summary: This study observed kidney behavior in a large NICU population using creatinine lab results, finding that premature infants with shorter gestational ages took longer to clear maternal creatinine. Significant differences were found in creatinine filtration half-life among different gestational age groups, while there was no notable difference in steady-state creatinine concentration.

Non-phthalate plasticizer DENT preserves adequate blood component quality during storage in PVC blood bags

Linda Larsson et al.

Summary: This study compared blood bags made with DEHT and DEHP plasticizers, finding that although there was slightly higher hemolysis in DEHT, all results remained below the European limit. DEHT was shown to provide adequate blood component quality and is proposed as a strong candidate for replacing DEHP in blood bags.

Associations of Prenatal Exposure to Phthalates with Measures of Cognition in 4.5-Month-Old Infants

Francheska M. Merced-Nieves et al.

Summary: The study found a gender difference in the association between prenatal phthalate exposure and infants' physical reasoning. For female infants, the exposure was associated with increased viewing time of events they couldn't comprehend, while for male infants, higher exposure was linked to increased viewing time of events they could understand.

Neurotoxicity of Ortho-Phthalates: Recommendations for Critical Policy Reforms to Protect Brain Development in Children

Stephanie M. Engel et al.

Summary: Robust data from longitudinal birth cohort studies and experimental studies suggest that exposure to ortho-phthalates can impair brain development and increase risks for learning, attention, and behavioral disorders in childhood. Immediate policy reforms are needed to eliminate ortho-phthalates from products and reduce exposures, with specific attention to socially vulnerable populations. Multi-pronged regulatory approaches at federal and state levels are necessary for the feasible goal of eliminating ortho-phthalates.
