The corrosion resistance of the TiB2-12(Fe-Co-Cr-Ni) cermets can be improved by reducing the size of TiB2 powder, increasing the proportion of Fe-Co-Cr-Ni solid solution, and controlling the porosity of the cermet and the precipitation of secondary borides. The corrosion kinetics exhibits a linear relation with the immersion time.
Nine novel TiB2-12(Fe-Co-Cr-Ni) cermets were prepared using spark plasma sintering at 1400 degrees C, 1500 degrees C, and 1600 degrees C, and their corrosion behaviors were investigated in molten aluminum at 700 degrees C. The corrosion kinetics of these cermets exhibited a linear relation with the immersion time. A comparison of their corrosion rates suggested that their corrosion resistance could be improved by lowering the size of TiB2 powder, increasing the proportion of Fe-Co-Cr-Ni solid solution, and controlling the porosity of the cermet and the precipitation of secondary borides. The corrosion mechanism of the TiB2-12(Fe-Co-Cr-Ni) cermet in molten aluminum was also discussed.
