Application of three self-developed ECT sensors for monitoring the moisture content in sand and mortar

Wentao Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed three types of capacitive sensors to monitor the moisture content in cement-based materials, and found that sensors with internal electrodes were more sensitive to changes in humidity, while external electrode sensors improved the homogeneity of the sensitive field. Additionally, experimental results showed that the capacitance signals of sand and cement mortar increased exponentially with increasing relative humidity.

Utilization of barium slag to improve chloride-binding ability of cement-based material

Pian Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that adding 10-30% of barium slag (BS) significantly increased the chloride-binding ability of the cement-BS system. This was mainly due to the optimized pore structures, facilitation of the formation of Friedel's salt in hardened pastes, and reduction of physically adsorbed chloride ions.

Hydration and mechanical properties of cement-marble powder system incorporating triisopropanolamine

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: The incorporation of triisopropanolamine (TIPA) enhanced the mechanical strength and capillary water absorption of cement-marble powder (MP) mortar, with the improvement of these properties observed when the TIPA dosage exceeded 0.06%. The acceleration effect of TIPA on the cement-MP system hydration process was found to be the main reason for the enhancement of these properties.

Low carbon cementitious materials: Sodium sulfate activated ultrafine slag/fly ash blends at ambient temperature

Junjie Zhang et al.

Summary: Na2SO4 (NS)-activated slag as an alkali-activated binder showed slower strength development but lower CO2 emissions potential compared to NaOH and water glass. By using ultra-fine slag and fly ash (FA), the compressive strength was improved while reducing CO2 emissions. The study indicated a promising low carbon alkali-activated binder.

Insights to the sulfate resistance and microstructures of alkali-activated metakaolin/slag pastes

Huajun Zhu et al.

Summary: Substitution of metakaolin with slag increased precursor reactivity, leading to higher reaction rates and improved mechanical properties and sulfate resistance in alkaliactivated cement. The development of gel phases and pore structures, as well as the generation of C-A-S-H, contribute to the better sulfate resistance and more compact microstructure observed with higher slag content. An optimal replacement level of 30 wt% metakaolin was identified for improved sulfate resistance and prevention of potential ettringite damage in practical applications.

Effect of chloride attack on the bonded concrete system repaired by UHPC

Qing Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that under chloride attack, the compressive and bonding strength of UHPC repaired systems decrease, along with a reduction in flexural performance. Electrochemical behavior and microstructural analysis indicate that the UHPC layer has better resistance to chloride attack compared to the matrix layer.

Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and its application for investigating the hydration of cement-based materials: State-of-the-art

Kaiyue Zhao et al.

Summary: Cement hydration is crucial for determining the properties of cementitious materials, and a deep understanding of this process can lead to improvements in material properties and solutions for concrete applications. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is emerging as a powerful non-destructive technique for studying the conversion of water states during cement hydration, offering unique advantages compared to conventional methods. The application of QENS in cement-based materials provides insights into hydration mechanisms and kinetics, with promising possibilities for further research.

Early age hydration and application of blended magnesium potassium phosphate cements for reduced corrosion of reactive metals

Laura J. Gardner et al.

Summary: The study found that Magnesium potassium phosphate cements (MKPC) can effectively retard the corrosion of reactive uranium metal. Optimized formulations of MKPC with low water content, fly ash (FA) and blast furnace slag (BFS) showed good fluidity, strength and phase assemblage. In-situ time resolved synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction revealed that the inclusion of BFS delayed the formation of Struvite-K, and MKPC systems have the potential application in limiting uranium corrosion rates.
