The study investigated the high-temperature rheological properties of asphalt binders modified with recycled low-density polyethylene and crumb rubber. The results showed that the hybrid modification improved the storage stability, Superpave performance grading, and high temperature performance of the binders, suggesting it as a sustainable strategy in the paving industry.
This paper aimed at investigating the high-temperature rheological properties of asphalt binders modified with recycled low-density polyethylene (RPE) and crumb rubber (CR). To this end, a set of tests was conducted, namely: rotational viscosity, storage stability, Superpave performance grading, and multiple stress creep and recovery. The results indicated that the hybrid modification enhanced the storage stability of the modified binders. The modifiers increased the Superpave parameter (G*/sin8) and, consequently, the continuous grade and PG of the binders, as well as successfully enhanced the high temperature performance of the binders as indicated by the MSCR test results. The hybrid modification with RPE and CR showed to be an interesting strategy to increase sustainability in the paving industry. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
