In-situ effect in cross-ply laminates under various loading conditions analyzed with hybrid macro/micro-scale computational models

Qingping Sun et al.

Summary: This study conducted mull-scale finite element analyses based on 3D hybrid macro/micro-scale computational models to investigate the in-situ effect imposed by neighboring plies on the failure initiation and propagation of cross-ply laminates. The results showed good agreements between the computational models and analytical predictions, indicating high accuracy in quantifying the in-situ effect. Empirical formulas for in-situ strengths as a function of embedded ply thickness and different ply angle were developed, and new failure criteria accounting for the in-situ strengths were proposed to predict laminated composites failure under multi-axial stress states.

Summary: In this study, a new computational framework is proposed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of SLSed CFRP, describing fiber distribution with a fiber packing algorithm and considering porosity generated in the manufacturing process. The computational framework is validated through XCT measurements and tensile tests, exploring the effects of fiber volume fraction and orientation distribution on the mechanical behavior of SLSed CF/PA12 composite.

Summary: The study developed an ICME framework for CFRP composites using a bottom-up multi-scale modeling approach, aiming to reduce lead time for lightweight vehicle structural applications. By integrating computational models at four size scales, the properties and failure mechanisms of CFRP composites were successfully characterized and predicted, showing potential for virtual evaluation and design guidance for structural applications.

Meso-scale modeling and damage analysis of carbon/epoxy woven fabric composite under in-plane tension and compression loadings

Guowei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties and damage behaviors of carbon/epoxy woven fabric composite under in-plane tension and compression using experiment and simulation. Different material constitutive laws are established for the three components, showing significantly different mechanical properties and damage evolutions based on loading conditions and initial geometry characteristics. The study reveals that a non-linear stress-strain curve with clear transition region and intensive damage in tension, while a quasi-linear behavior up to facture is observed in compression with little damage prior to final fracture.

Experimental investigation on the effects of fabric architectures on mechanical and damage behaviors of carbon/epoxy woven composites

Summary: The study investigates the mechanical behaviors and damage evolutions of carbon/epoxy woven fabric composites with different geometries under tensile loading. It is found that the crimp ratio is a critical factor governing mechanical properties, with composites having smaller crimp ratios showing quasi-linear stress-strain curves with higher elastic modulus and strength. The study also reveals that regardless of fabric pattern, the elastic modulus, strength, and damage initiation are linearly correlated with the crimp ratio.
