Effect of Discrete Breathers on the Specific Heat of a Nonlinear Chain

Mohit Singh et al.

Summary: Analysis of a nonlinear chain with sixth-order polynomial on-site potential shows that specific heat of the system is affected by long-living discrete breathers (DBs), which reduce (increase) the specific heat in the case of hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity. The total-to-kinetic-energy ratio is minimal (maximal) in the regime of maximal energy localization by DBs under hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity.

Spatially Localized Oscillations in Low-Stability States of Metal Systems

R. T. Murzaev et al.

Summary: The analysis shows that the discreteness and nonlinearity of the medium are crucial for the existence of discrete breathers, which play an important role in the formation of physical properties of crystals. Furthermore, it is argued that this role is significantly enhanced in states of the crystal lattice far from thermodynamic equilibrium and in low-stability pre-transitional states.

Discrete breathers in a triangular β-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou lattice

Rita Babicheva et al.

Summary: The article proposes a practical approach to search for (quasi-) discrete breathers on a triangular beta-FPUT lattice by superimposing localizing functions on delocalized nonlinear vibrational modes with frequencies above the phonon spectrum of the lattice. It discusses zero-dimensional and one-dimensional breathers, with the latter divided into two families based on triangular lattice and chain vibrational modes. The systematic approach reveals various spatially localized oscillations bifurcating from the upper edge of the phonon band.
