Risk of antibiotic treatment failure in premenopausal women with uncomplicated urinary tract infection

Anne M. Butler et al.

Summary: The study found that the risk of treatment failure varies among different oral antibiotics for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, with higher risk associated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) compared to nitrofurantoin, and lower or similar risk associated with broad- versus narrow-spectrum beta-lactams. Therefore, considering serious safety warnings for fluoroquinolones, nitrofurantoin may be preferable as the first-line agent for outpatient treatment of uncomplicated UTI.
