Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

MAP17 contributes to non-small cell lung cancer progression via suppressing miR-27a-3p expression and p38 signaling pathway

Qian Liang et al.

Summary: MAP17 functions as an oncogene in NSCLC by suppressing the activation of the p38 pathway. Additionally, miR-27a-3p can inhibit the expression of MAP17, thereby suppressing the progression of NSCLC.

Improving gene function predictions using independent transcriptional components

Carlos G. Urzua-Traslavina et al.

Summary: The study introduces a consensus independent component analysis and guilt-by-association approach to predict gene function, aiming to overcome the limitation in interpreting transcriptomic data. The results demonstrate that transcriptional components derived from independent component analysis enable more confident functionality predictions, improve predictions with the addition of new members to gene sets, and are less affected by gene multi-functionality. Predictions based on human or mouse transcriptomic data are publicly available for exploration on a web portal.

Metastasis is altered through multiple processes regulated by the E2F1 transcription factor

Matthew R. Swiatnicki et al.

Summary: The E2F family of transcription factors plays a crucial role in cellular processes, including cell cycle regulation, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Alterations in the Rb/E2F pathway are associated with various cancers, such as breast cancer. Research on E2F1 ablation in breast cancer models revealed differences in genomic alterations related to tumor etiology, with potential disruptions in metastasis pathways.

Atypical E2Fs either Counteract or Cooperate with RB during Tumorigenesis Depending on Tissue Context

Eva Moreno et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a tissue-specific interaction between RB and atypical E2Fs in controlling tumorigenesis, showing enhanced tumorigenesis in the liver with combined loss of RB and atypical E2Fs, while inhibition of tumorigenesis in the pituitary gland. It suggests that atypical E2Fs and RB act cooperatively as tumor suppressors in hepatocytes, while atypical E2Fs may promote or inhibit tumorigenesis depending on tissue type and RB status, highlighting the context-dependent roles of these factors in maintaining genetic stability.

OLIG2 regulates lncRNAs and its own expression during oligodendrocyte lineage formation

Haichao Wei et al.

Summary: The study integrated the genome-wide OLIG2 binding and epigenetic modification status of coding and non-coding genes during different stages of oligodendrocyte differentiation, revealing potential functions and regulation of lncRNAs by OLIG2. It discovered dynamic regulation of bivalent genes by OLIG2 during oligodendrocyte development and a novel self-regulation mechanism of OLIG2 through its own mRNA 3' UTR. These findings provide insights into the transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms underlying oligodendrocyte development and contribute to understanding cell fate decisions during oligodendrocyte lineage formation.

G protein gamma 7 suppresses progression of lung adenocarcinoma by inhibiting E2F transcription factor 1

Hongyu Zheng et al.

Summary: The G protein gamma 7 (GNG7) has been found to be aberrantly expressed in certain malignant tumors, with a study focusing on its antitumor role in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cells. Down-regulation of GNG7 in LUAD tissues was found to correlate with patient survival. Functional experiments demonstrated that GNG7 acts as a tumor suppressor in LUAD cells by inhibiting E2F1 and suppressing cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.
