This study reports the presence of a beta-D-fructopyranosyl-(2 -> 1)-linked fructan in nature for the first time, with a beta-D-fructofuranosyl-(2 -> 1)-linked fructan in a mixture from Codonopsis pilosula. The molecular weights of these two fructans were determined by high-performance gel permeation chromatography (HPGPC) to be 2.33 and 1.31 kDa, and their structures were analyzed using 1D and 2D NMR.
