Cellulosic substrate materials with multi-scale building blocks: fabrications, properties and applications in bioelectronic devices

Cellulosic substrate materials play a crucial role in the development of bioelectronic devices, promoting green and eco-friendly practices while requiring careful consideration of the properties of building blocks for optimal performance.
Cellulosic substrate materials, as one of the most important bio-based substrate materials, have good flexibility, excellent mechanical property, outstanding biodegradability, and low toxicity. Cellulosic substrate materials promote the green and eco-friendly development of bioelectronic devices, which can effectively reduce environmental pollution after the upgrade or discard of bioelectronic devices. The significant differences in size, morphology, surface group, and crystallinity of building blocks of cellulosic substrate materials affect the optimal performance of bioelectronic devices. In this review, we introduced the isolations of cellulosic building blocks with different scales and the fabrications of cellulosic substrate materials. We discussed the effect of building blocks on surface properties, optical properties, mechanical properties, barrier properties, dielectric properties, aging properties, and biodegradable properties of cellulosic substrate materials. We summarized the applications of cellulosic substrate materials on bioelectronic devices such as wearable devices, implantable devices, point-ofcare analytical devices, and energy conversion/storage devices. Finally, we proposed potential challenges and prospects for cellulosic substrate materials in bioelectronic devices. The review could help to choose the appropriate cellulosic substrate materials to achieve optimal performance of bioelectronic devices based on the properties of cellulosic substrate materials.
