Rational design of α-Fe2O3 nanocubes supported BiVO4 Z-scheme photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic under visible light

Changchang Ma et al.

Summary: The Z-scheme BiVO4/alpha-Fe2O3 photocatalyst, synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method, showed improved photocatalytic activity in the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride compared to pure BiVO4 and alpha-Fe2O3 nanocubes under visible light irradiation. The study revealed that the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction between BiVO4 and alpha-Fe2O3 increased the specific surface area and promoted the separation of photoinduced carriers, leading to enhanced photocatalytic performance.

Mesoporous sulfur-doped CoFe2O4 as a new Fenton catalyst for the highly efficient pollutants removal

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that sulfurization of CoFe2O4 significantly improves its Fenton catalytic performance, leading to enhanced pollutant removal efficiency due to increased specific area and decreased electron transfer resistance. Density functional theory calculations further revealed that increased charge densities of Fe-S and Co-S bonds contribute to the presence of low valence Fe and Co species in S-CoFe2O4, promoting H2O2 activation.

Degradation of cefixime antibiotic in water by atmospheric plasma bubbles: Performance, degradation pathways and toxicity evaluation

Tianqi Zhang et al.

Summary: Excessive use and indiscriminate discharge of antibiotics lead to their accumulation in the environment, posing significant ecological and physiological risks. Non-thermal plasma technology is gaining attention for the efficient breakdown of antibiotics, but faces challenges in maximizing reactive plasma effects and scaling approaches. In this study, NTP was used inside forming bubbles to efficiently target cefixime antibiotic molecules, achieving high-performance degradation and deactivation of antibiotic activity with no observed toxic effects on human cell lines.

Iron-nickel bimetallic metal-organic frameworks as bifunctional Fenton-like catalysts for enhanced adsorption and degradation of organic contaminants under visible light: Kinetics and mechanistic studies

Qiangshun Wu et al.

Summary: Iron-nickel bimetallic organic frameworks were developed as bifunctional materials for adsorption and photo-Fenton degradation of organic dyes with different charge properties. The enhanced adsorption capacity and degradation performance were attributed to factors such as enlarged specific surface area, pore volume, and decreased surface charges induced by Ni doping. The dual objectives of in-situ decontamination and adsorbent regeneration were achieved, showcasing advantages like wider pH working range, better stability, and reusability of catalysts.

A novel strategy for enhancing heterogeneous Fenton degradation of dye wastewater using natural pyrite: Kinetics and mechanism

Chongqing Wang et al.

Summary: This study enhances the catalytic efficiency of pyrite by pre-reaction with hydrogen peroxide to degrade recalcitrant contaminants. By optimizing factors such as pre-reaction time, hydrogen peroxide concentration, solution pH, and dye concentration, efficient degradation of contaminants using natural pyrite was achieved. Enhanced dye degradation was attributed to the production of hydroxyl radicals facilitated by self-regulation of pH, Fe2+ release, and Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle.
