New bi-functionalized ordered mesoporous material as heterogeneous catalyst for production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Maoqi Cao et al.

Summary: A newly designed two dimensional hexagonal bi-functionalized mesoporous organosilica material (b-MPOS) with high specific surface area and pore diameter was synthesized through a post-grafting synthetic pathway. This material, containing both acid and basic functional groups, was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for carbohydrates transformation, resulting in a high product yield of 86 mol% in synthesizing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from fructose under microwave irradiated heating conditions.
