PICRUSt2 functionally predicts organic compounds degradation and sulfate reduction pathways in an acidogenic bioreactor

Jun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influences of sulfate on the acidification phase of a two-phase anaerobic system using a laboratory-scale acidogenic bioreactor. The results showed that sulfate accumulation resulted in the accumulation of volatile fatty acids, especially propionate and butyrate, which negatively affected the system performance. Desulfovibrio was identified as the primary sulfate-reducing bacteria, and the genes encoding short-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase were mainly carried by order Clostridiales. The assimilatory sulfate reduction process became dominant over the dissimilatory process under high-sulfate conditions.

Baogang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates for the first time the potential of a Gram-positive bacterium, Lactococcus raffinolactis, in effectively reducing V(V) contamination. The reduction process involves both intracellular and extracellular mechanisms, with nitrite reductase playing a key role. The study also highlights the importance of oxidative stress tolerance and extracellular polymeric substances in V(V) bio-reduction.

Remediation of nitrate contamination by membrane hydrogenotrophic denitrifying biofilm integrated in microbial electrolysis cell

Dandan Liang et al.

Summary: Biological denitrification in water lacking electron donors is usually limited, but can be effectively improved by using gas diffusion membrane integrated microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) to generate hydrogen from organic wastes for cost-efficient denitrification. Different materials of MECs achieved high overall nitrogen removal rates of 90%-95% at all applied voltages, with decreasing voltage significantly improving electron utilization efficiency. Integration of MEC with gas diffusion membrane greatly improved total nitrogen removal by 40%, with dominant hydrogenotrophic denitrifiers facilitating nitrogen removal and higher abundance of functional denitrification related genes predicted by PICRUSt2 based on 16S rRNA gene data.

Enhanced nitrogen removal from high-strength ammonium wastewater by improving heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification process: Insight into the influence of dissolved oxygen in the outer layer of the biofilm

PengYing Xiao et al.

Summary: Optimizing the heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification process in the membrane-aerated biofilm reactor by increasing dissolved oxygen concentration in the outer layer biofilm enhances removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, TN, and COD. The increase in DO concentrations promotes the enrichment of HN-AD bacteria and leads to a superior nitrogen removal process in high-strength NH4+-N wastewater treatment.

Microbial community and metabolic responses to electrical field intensity for alleviation of ammonia inhibition in an integrated bioelectrochemical system (BES)

Han Wang et al.

Summary: The electric field intensity plays a significant role in the effectiveness of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) in alleviating ammonia inhibition, with low voltages improving ammonia removal and methane production, while high voltages leading to a significant decrease in methane production. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens show more resistance to high voltages compared to aceticlastic methanogens, and certain bacteria are vulnerable to external electric field intensity. Abundance changes in metabolic pathways demonstrate that the degradation of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins in all steps of the anaerobic digestion process can be affected by different applied voltages.
