Effect of SiC and TiC addition on microstructural and mechanical characteristics of microwave sintered ZrB2 based hybrid composites

Effect of TiC addition on structure and properties of spark plasma sintered ZrB2-SiC-TiC ultrahigh temperature ceramic composite

Summary: The addition of TiC can reduce the sintering temperature of ZrB2-20% SiC composite, increase the density and mechanical properties, with the solubility limit of TiC in the sintered ZrB2 lying between 5% and 10%. The elastic modulus values of the TiC-added composites agree well with experimentally determined values, indicating highly dense and defect-free materials. Residual stresses in the matrix phase are tensile and decrease with increasing TiC addition, while in the reinforcement phase, they are compressive. TiC-added composites exhibit better mechanical properties than the base composite.
