Summary: Alveolar macrophages in COPD patients show impaired cytokine release and diminished phagocytosis, with COPD exacerbations exhibiting immune dysfunction towards respiratory pathogens. Cigarette smoke and its extract exacerbate bacterial infections in COPD patients. The protein MARCO, involved in pathogen clearance, is downregulated by cigarette smoke extract through the proteasomal degradation of p300, impairing bacterial phagocytosis.
