Validated MAGIC and GWAS population mapping reveals the link between vitamin E content and natural variation in chorismate metabolism in tomato

Estanislao Burgos et al.

Summary: By studying the genetic determinants of tocochromanol accumulation in tomato fruits and genetically engineering their biosynthetic pathway, a total of 25 quantitative trait loci were identified across the genome. By bypassing specific pathway points, the engineered tomatoes showed increased tocopherols and tocotrienols content, indicating a trade-off between VTE and natural variation in chorismate metabolism.

Summary: Our agricultural systems are facing the urgent challenge of feeding a growing global population, requiring a better understanding of plant genetic and phenotypic diversity. Recent advances in plant genomics, combined with molecular profiling approaches such as genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics, offer insights into the complex architecture of agricultural traits and guide crop breeding strategies.
