Permafrost existence is closely associated with soil organic matter preservation: Evidence from relationships among environmental factors and soil carbon in a permafrost boundary area

Guimin Liu et al.

Summary: The study showed that under similar climatic conditions, areas underlain by permafrost have higher soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and better preservation of soil organic matter (SOM) compared to areas without permafrost. Soil water content and bulk density were better at explaining SOC content variances in non-permafrost sites. Additionally, north-facing non-permafrost sites had significantly higher SOC contents than south-facing non-permafrost sites.
