Effect of statin therapy on SARS-CoV-2 infection-related mortality in hospitalized patients

Lluis Masana et al.

Summary: This study suggests that patients admitted for COVID-19 who were treated with statins had a lower mortality rate compared to those not receiving statin therapy. Lower mortality rates were observed in patients who had been on statin therapy prior to hospitalization, indicating that statin therapy should not be discontinued due to the global concern of the pandemic or in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Routine use of statins and increased COVID-19 related mortality in inpatients with type 2 diabetes: Results from the CORONADO study

Bertrand Cariou et al.

Summary: This study found a significant association between routine statin treatment and increased mortality in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Additionally, although patients using statins had similar rates of the primary outcome as non-users within 7 and 28 days, mortality rates were significantly higher in statin users.

Racial Disparities in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Mortality Are Driven by Unequal Infection Risks

Jon Zelner et al.

Summary: The study analyzed individual-level COVID-19 data from Michigan and found that Blacks experienced the highest burden of confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19, with incidence and mortality rates more than twice as high as Whites. The disparity in mortality between Blacks and Whites is primarily driven by higher rates of COVID-19 infection across all age groups, rather than differences in case-fatality rates.

Summary: This study found an association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and severe disease outcomes in patients with COVID-19, including increased mortality, ICU admission, and need for mechanical ventilation. Patients with MetS had significantly higher mortality rates, increased ICU admissions, and greater need for mechanical ventilation compared to those without MetS.

Summary: The study revealed a significant reduction in mortality among COVID-19 patients who used statins. Even after propensity score matching, statin users continued to exhibit lower mortality rates.

Summary: The use of statins in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 is associated with a lower risk of inpatient mortality, potentially due to their anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic properties.
