And we just have to keep going: Task shifting and the production of burnout among overdose response workers with lived experience

Michelle Olding et al.

Summary: In North America, overdose response programs are increasingly shifting tasks to less specialized workers, particularly those with lived experience of drug use, to increase effectiveness and engagement. Despite reports of widespread burnout among frontline responders, little consideration has been given to the implications of task shifting on workers' wellbeing and service delivery. This study in Vancouver, Canada, found that workers at low-barrier supervised consumption sites commonly reported burnout due to the demanding nature of their work, limited economic security, and lack of opportunities for advancement. The devaluing and casualization of overdose response labor, along with structural vulnerabilities, are central to burnout among workers with lived experience, indicating a need for interventions beyond individual-level support to address these systemic issues.

Moral Injury in Health-Care Workers During COVID-19 Pandemic

Stacey Diane Aranez Litam et al.

Summary: The study found that secondary traumatic stress is significantly associated with moral injury among healthcare workers, while burnout and compassion fatigue did not play a significant role in this study. Mental health professionals may aid healthcare workers experiencing trauma symptoms by providing flexible session arrangements and short-term interventions through tele-mental health platforms.
