The diverse mycoflora present on dried cannabis (Cannabis sativaL., marijuana) inflorescences in commercial production

Zamir K. Punja

Summary: The study assessed the fungal presence and diversity in harvested dried inflorescences of cannabis from three licensed facilities in British Columbia from 2017 to 2019. A swab method was used to repeatedly test samples, identifying 34 different fungal species with varying compositions across different facilities and sampling times. This method provided a qualitative assessment of viable mold contaminants on cannabis buds and reflected the diversity of mycoflora present.

The History of Botrytis Taxonomy, the Rise of Phylogenetics, and Implications for Species Recognition

Andrea R. Garfinkel

Summary: Botrytis is an ancient, well-studied, and economically important fungal genus. Through the use of phylogenetic tools, a taxonomic revolution is currently taking place, with a significant increase in putative species and the likelihood of more discoveries in the future. The implementation of phylogenetic species recognition concepts is providing greater resolution on the relatedness among species and overcoming issues in historical species recognition.

Characterization of Diaporthe spp. Associated With Spruce Decline on Colorado Blue Spruce in Michigan

Monique L. Sakalidis et al.

Summary: Since 2006, there has been a decrease in the number of Colorado blue spruce in landscape trees and Christmas trees in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, primarily characterized by slow needle loss and branch dieback. Diaporthe fungi have been consistently linked to this decline, with new species identified in symptomatic trees in Michigan.

Botrytis spp.:AContemporary Perspective and Synthesis of Recent Scientific Developments of a Widespread Genus that Threatens Global Food Security

Jonathan K. Richards et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of Botrytis spp. causing gray mold, discussing pathogen biology, genomic characterization, genome editing, and fungicide resistance. The breakthrough in plant engineering for fungal resistance shows promise, but fungicide resistance remains a major concern. The use of CRISPR/Cas9 technology has significantly advanced control mechanisms and gene discovery studies in pathogen biology.
