Improvement of Solid Precipitation Measurements Using a Hotplate Precipitation Gauge

Julie M. Theriault et al.

Summary: The study compares the accuracy of the Hotplate precipitation gauge with standard weighing gauges and finds that after wind correction, the Hotplate gauge bias is near zero and similar to the weighing gauges. The RMSE of the Hotplate gauge measurements is lower than weighing gauges for wind speeds up to 5 m s(-1), showing its performance independence of solid precipitation types.

Improvement of Snow Gauge Collection Efficiency through a Knowledge of Solid Precipitation Fall Speed

Nicolas R. Leroux et al.

Summary: The study used data collected at the Marshall Field Site to show that the scatter in collection efficiency can be reduced by considering the fall speed of solid precipitation particles. By dividing the collection efficiency into classes based on the measured mean-event particle fall speed, it was found that slower-falling particles are associated with lower collection efficiency. Additionally, a new transfer function was developed that includes the fall speed of hydrometeors, resulting in lower root-mean-square error compared to previous transfer functions.

Experimental evidence of the wind-induced bias of precipitation gauges using particle image velocimetry and particle tracking in the wind tunnel

Arianna Cauteruccio et al.

Summary: Wind tunnel experiments were conducted to study the deviation of rain drop trajectories when approaching the collector of catching-type gauges. The study compared the aerodynamics of cylindrical, inverted-conical, and chimney-shaped instruments, with the chimney-shaped instrument demonstrating lower performance in deviating raindrop trajectories when immersed in a wind field.

CrocO_v1.0: a particle filter to assimilate snowpack observations in a spatialised framework

Bertrand Cluzet et al.

Summary: Monitoring the evolution of snowpack properties in mountainous areas is crucial for avalanche hazard forecasting and water resources management, with limited traditional observation coverage. CrocO is an ensemble data assimilation system that can analyze and smooth snowpack observation data. Feasibility testing shows that assimilating height of snow and reflectance observations in a spatialized context can significantly improve results.

Observed snow depth trends in the European Alps: 1971 to 2019

Michael Matiu et al.

Summary: This study presents an Alpine-wide analysis of snow depth in the European Alps, incorporating data from over 2000 stations in six countries. The analysis reveals decreasing trends in snow depth for most stations from November to May over the past few decades. Different regions within the Alps show varying trends, challenging the generalization of results across the entire mountain range.

Multi-sensor analysis of monthly gridded snow precipitation on alpine glaciers

Rebecca Gugerli et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of three precipitation data products based on different data sources using reliable daily snow water equivalent estimates from two Swiss glacier sites. The results show a large bias of all precipitation products at monthly and seasonal resolution, which is influenced by in situ wind direction during snowfall events.
