Changes in the Prevalence and Correlates of Weight-Control Behaviors and Weight Perception in Adolescents in the UK, 1986-2015

Francesca Solmi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from three UK cohort studies spanning 30 years to investigate the changes in prevalence of adolescent weight-loss and weight-perception behaviors and their association with depressive symptoms. The findings showed an increase in weight-control behaviors, especially in 2015, compared to 1986 and 2005, with a greater increase in boys than girls. Girls in 2015 were more likely to experience depressive symptoms associated with these behaviors compared to 2005 and 1986. These results suggest that the focus on obesity prevention may have unintended consequences on adolescents' mental health, highlighting the importance of addressing disordered eating behaviors in public health campaigns.
