Recent insights into microalgae-assisted microbial fuel cells for generating sustainable bioelectricity

Mostafa E. Elshobary et al.

Summary: The usage of microbial fuel cells (MFC) for power generation from renewable biomass sources and the efficient utilization of chemical energy stored in microalgae biomass for the production of biofuels and other bioproducts have attracted significant attention. Incorporating microalgae into MFC can enhance efficiency and provide a cost-effective renewable approach for electricity generation. While microalgae-assisted MFCs (MA-MFCs) show promise in sustainability, further research is needed to optimize performance and achieve large-scale application.

Recent progress in genetically modified microalgae for enhanced carbon dioxide sequestration

Bahram Barati et al.

Summary: Improving photosynthesis in microalgae is crucial for increasing biomass productivity and CO2 sequestration efficiency. Strategies such as optimizing enzyme efficiency, reducing antenna size, expanding the photosynthetically active radiation range, enhancing carbon fixation pathways and enzymes, and minimizing CO2 release can enhance photosynthesis. Traditional transformation and gene editing technologies offer feasible solutions for implementing these modifications.

Re-framing the threat of global warming: an empirical causal loop diagram of climate change, food insecurity and societal collapse

C. E. Richards et al.

Summary: This paper aims to identify and structure an empirical evidence base of the climate change, food insecurity and societal collapse pathway. By developing an original methodology and utilizing a novel-format causal loop diagram, the paper explores how climate change may lead to disruptions in agricultural systems and food supply, ultimately causing economic shocks, socio-political instability, starvation, migration, and conflict. Suggestions for future research are also provided to further enhance our understanding of the causal pathways between climate change and societal collapse.

Sustainable production of microalgae in raceways: Nutrients and water management as key factors influencing environmental impacts

Axel Herrera et al.

Summary: Microalgae production is important for its energy efficiency compared to land crops. Evaluating environmental impacts, the main factors affecting performance were electricity use, fertilizer demand, and transport. Recovered nutrients from manure and wastewater can significantly reduce carbon emissions, but there is a threshold for manure transport distance.

A New, Quick, and Simple Protocol to Evaluate Microalgae Polysaccharide Composition

Antoine Decamp et al.

Summary: A new methodological approach relying on enzyme specificity was developed to estimate the composition of bioactive polysaccharides produced by microalgae directly in algal cultures. This method allows for routine monitoring of the quality of bioactive polysaccharides in algal cultures grown in photobioreactors, with high resolution and without the constraints associated with traditional chromatographic methods.

Microalgae acclimatization in industrial wastewater and its effect on growth and primary metabolite composition

Azima Syafaini Japar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of acclimatization on the growth performance, biochemical, pigment compositions of four microalgal species. The results showed that acclimatization led to increased biomass production, shorter lag time, and significant increment in lipid contents for some microalgae. Therefore, industrial wastewater like anaerobic digested POME is a promising medium for microalgae cultivation, with acclimatization being a feasible process for future microalgae-based products.
