An Overview on Industrial and Medical Applications of Bio-Pigments Synthesized by Marine Bacteria

Ali Nawaz et al.

Summary: Marine bacterial species contribute significantly to the oceanic population, producing biologically effectual moieties with various medical and industrial applications. The use of marine-derived bacterial pigments is increasing due to their natural, environmentally safe, and health beneficial compounds, with potential applications in food, pharmaceutical, textile, and cosmetic industries. The biodegradability and high environmental compatibility of marine bio-pigments make them a valuable alternative to synthetic colors, especially in industries where concerns over hazardous effects are present.

Microbial Production of Melanin Pigments from Caffeic Acid and L-Tyrosine Using Streptomyces glaucescens and FCS-ECH-Expressing Escherichia coli

Soo-Yeon Ahn et al.

Summary: In this study, synthetic allomelanin was produced using wild-type Streptomyces glaucescens and recombinant Escherichia coli strains. The synthesized melanin exhibited comparable radical scavenging capacity to eumelanin and was used in cotton fabric dyeing for improved dyeing fastness. Recombinant E. coli strains expressing various enzymes were investigated for improved melanin production and novel functionalities, with chemical analysis attempted using H-NMR, FT-IR, and MALDI-TOF.

Increases of Lipophilic Antioxidants and Anticancer Activity of Coix Seed Fermented by Monascus purpureus

Haiying Zeng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that fermented coix seed by M. purpureus is rich in lipophilic antioxidants such as tocols, gamma-oryzanol, and coixenolide, demonstrating high antioxidant and anticancer activities. The levels of these antioxidants significantly increased in the fermented seed compared to the raw seed, leading to a decrease in IC50 for inhibiting HEp2 cells. Fermentation enhances the health-promoting functions of coix seeds by boosting the presence of bioavailable antioxidants.

Extraction and identification of fungal pigment from Penicillium europium using different spectral studies

Aejaz Abdullatif Khan et al.

Summary: The study isolates and identifies novel fungal pigments from Penicillium europium through spectral studies. The structure of the pure pigment was confirmed as 2-(1,5, dimethyl hexyl)3,5-dimethyl-6-hydro-1,4-benzoquinone with the molecular formula C16H24O3. Toxicity study showed no adverse effects on rats, indicating potential industrial applications as a replacement for synthetic dyes.

Production and extraction of red pigment by solid-state fermentation of broken rice using Monascus sanguineus NFCCI 2453

Anala Vinay Kumar Shetty et al.

Summary: This study successfully utilized broken rice as a substrate for solid-state fermentation mediated by Monascus sanguineus NFCCI 2453 to produce red pigment. Response surface methodology was used to optimize extraction parameters, leading to the highest red pigment yield. The developed model showed good accuracy in predicting experimental values, laying the foundation for efficient red pigment production using M. sanguineus with a low-cost substrate.

Pigment bioproduction by Monascus purpureus using corn bran, a byproduct of the corn industry

Adrielle Borges de Almeida et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the production of pigments from Monascus purpureus using submerged fermentation with corn bran. The optimized conditions resulted in a pigment extract with high antioxidant and antibacterial activities, as well as thermal and pH stabilities. The pigment extract showed twice the antioxidant activity of the substrate (corn bran) used in its production, suggesting potential alternative use of corn bran for pigment production.

The Realm of Microbial Pigments in the Food Color Market

Babita Rana et al.

Summary: Food colorants are used to enhance the attractiveness of food, but there are concerns about the potential negative impact of synthetic colors on human health and the environment. Natural pigments derived from microorganisms are considered a promising alternative to synthetic food colorants due to their advantages in quality consistency, ease of production, and minimal impact on biodiversity. Algae, fungi, and bacteria are being explored as sources for microbial food pigments.

Purification and optimization of pink pigment produced by newly isolated bacterial strain Enterobacter sp. PWN1

Kasturi Poddar et al.

Summary: In this study, pigment-producing bacteria were isolated from kitchen wastewaters. A non-virulent bacterial strain PWN1 was selected based on dye assays and characterized as Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile, and non-coliform bacterium. The pigment production was growth-associated and could be accelerated after 40 hours of bacterial culture. After optimizing culture conditions, a biomass of 3.81 +/- 0.02 g/L was obtained, with a yield of 6.2% for crude pigment and 3.47% for purified pigment from biomass. The high yield of pigment suggests potential for industrial production, though further study is needed for its application.
