Gold and silver nanoparticles effects to the earthworm Eisenia fetida - the importance of tissue over soil concentrations

Jean-Paul Bourdineaud et al.

Summary: The research revealed that gold and silver nanoparticles have lower bioavailability in soil than their ionic forms, but at equivalent concentrations accumulated within earthworm tissues, they exhibit equal or higher toxic potential compared to their ionic forms.

Protective effect of methylene blue against copper oxide nanoparticle-induced neurobehavioral toxicity

Amira. A. Goma et al.

Summary: The study shows that copper oxide nanoparticle exposure induced neurobehavioral changes, increased copper content in the brain, and exacerbated lipid, protein, and DNA oxidative damage. Decreased activity of mitochondrial dehydrogenases was observed in copper-exposed rats. Histopathological findings revealed apoptotic cells. Co-treatment with methylene blue ameliorated the neurotoxic effects of copper oxide nanoparticles.

Mechanistic Effect Modeling of Earthworms in the Context of Pesticide Risk Assessment: Synthesis of the FORESEE Workshop

Valery E. Forbes et al.

Summary: The workshop focused on toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic (TKTD) and population modeling of earthworms in the context of ERA, aiming to explore how earthworm modeling could be applied to risk assessments in a tiered approach. Four submodules were included in the modeling approach to cover relevant processes for earthworm risk assessment: environment, behavior, TKTD, and population, with workgroups examining different aspects of the model for risk assessment and model testing. Collaboration among scientists from different stakeholder groups helped establish common ground and provided recommendations for addressing uncertainties in current risk assessments for plant protection products.

Joint effects of microplastic and dufulin on bioaccumulation, oxidative stress and metabolic profile of the earthworm (Eisenia fetida)

Wei Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics can exacerbate the oxidative damage and metabolic profile interference caused by pesticides in earthworms, significantly affecting their bioaccumulation. This provides important information for the risk assessment of pesticides and microplastics in environmental safety.

DNA damage and ovarian ultrastructural lesions induced by nickel oxide nano-particles in Blaps polycresta (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Dalia Abdel Moneim Kheirallah et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of NiO-NPs on the ovarian tissues of ground beetles, showing that NiO-NPs can induce DNA damage and cellular toxicity, leading to chromatin condensation and lysosome accumulation. This highlights the potential genotoxic effects of NiO-NPs on female insect gonads and suggests the need for further research on intracellular ROS generation.

Anchoring HFO nanoparticles on MWCNTs as high electron transfer composite adsorbent for the removal of H2S at low temperature

Ke Ji et al.

Summary: In this study, highly active hydrated ferric oxide (HFO) nanoparticles anchored on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized to improve the desulfurization performance. The results showed that adding MWCNTs significantly enhanced the low-temperature desulfurization performance of HFO, with the best performance achieved in the sample containing 20 wt% MWCNTs. Computational analysis using Material Studio 2019 and VASP confirmed the structure of HFO and the dispersed state of nanoparticles on MWCNTs surface.

Medium-term effects of Ag supplied directly or via sewage sludge to an agricultural soil on Eisenia fetida earthworm and soil microbial communities

Pauline Courtois et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of direct exposure to AgNPs or indirect exposure via sewage sludge contaminated with AgNPs on earthworms and soil microbial communities. Results showed that direct exposure to AgNPs led to a decrease in potential carbon respiration in the soil, while the addition of sewage sludge had a greater impact on soil microbial diversity. The formation of Ag sulfides in sewage sludge reduced the impact of AgNPs on earthworms and soil microorganisms compared to direct addition.

Combined toxic effects of dioxin-like PCB77 with Fe-based nanoparticles in earthworm Eisenia fetida

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: Iron-based nanomaterials, specifically nano-zero valent iron (nZVI), show promise for remediating persistent halogenated contaminants like dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls. However, their interactions with beneficial soil functions and joint toxicity effects remain unknown. This study found that both nZVI and PCB77 inhibited earthworm growth and reproduction, with a synergistic effect observed in combined exposure. The addition of nZVI reduced PCB77 levels while increasing its accumulation in earthworms, potentially due to aggravated epidermal damage.
