A cerium-photocatalyzed aerobic oxidation method has been developed for the transformation of primary and secondary benzylic alcohols to aldehydes and ketones, using inexpensive CeCl3 center dot 7H(2)O as the photocatalyst and air oxygen as the terminal oxidant.
