Architecture of the evaporite accumulation and salt structures dynamics in Tiddlybanken Basin, southeastern Norwegian Barents Sea

Muhammad Hassaan et al.

Summary: The study of the Tiddlybanken Basin in the southeastern Norwegian Barents Sea utilized a reprocessed seismic data set and well data to analyze base salt rift structures, evaporite accumulations, and evolution of salt structures. Late Devonian-early Carboniferous regional extensional stress formed three half-grabens separated by a trending horst and interference transfer zone. The horst's arcuate nature is attributed to pre-existing Timanian basement grain, while the interference transfer zone controls facies distribution and sedimentary thickness of evaporitic sequences.

Salt tectonics in a double salt-source layer setting (Eastern Persian Gulf, Iran): Insights from interpretation of seismic profiles and sequential cross-section restoration

Jafar Hassanpour et al.

Summary: Salt tectonics in the Eastern Persian Gulf, Iran, are associated with the flow of the Hormuz Salt and the Fars Salt layers, which began in the Early Paleozoic and Early Miocene, respectively, due to differential sedimentary loading and subsalt basement faults. Over time, the formation of diapirs and pillows remains unresolved, with significant salt extrusion leading to the development of allochthonous salt sheets and wings. The ascendancy of the Hormuz Salt occurred since the Late Oligocene, while the Fars Salt was mainly driven by differential sedimentary loading.

Regional correlation and seismic stratigraphy of Triassic Strata in the Greater Barents Sea: Implications for sediment transport in Arctic basins

Albina Gilmullina et al.

Summary: The Greater Barents Sea Basin in Arctic Russia and Norway is a well-studied intracratonic basin that stored a significant amount of sediment during the Triassic period. The sediment was transported northwest across the entire basin from a source in the east, comprising the Urals and West Siberia. This study sheds light on the geodynamics and provenance data in the Arctic region, providing insights into reservoir prediction and uplift processes that occurred over millions of years.

Principles of shortening in salt basins containing isolated minibasins

Oliver B. Duffy et al.

Summary: This study utilizes physical models to investigate thin-skinned regional shortening in salt-influenced basins with isolated minibasins, finding that the volume and distribution of salt prior to shortening are key controls, salt flow leads to tilting and rotation of minibasins, and different processes contribute to the deformation of minibasins during regional shortening. Our findings provide insights into the geometry and kinematics of shortened salt basins and the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of minibasins.

Halokinetic modulation of sedimentary thickness and architecture: A numerical modelling approach

Zoe A. Cumberpatch et al.

Summary: The study focuses on how subsurface salt flow influences contemporaneous sedimentary systems, using Discrete Element Modelling to reveal the stratigraphy and deformation processes around salt structures. Experimental results demonstrate the impact of salt growth on stratigraphic architecture and the changes in stratigraphy due to halokinetic deformation. The research underscores the significance of local fluctuations in diapir rise rate on stratigraphic architecture.

Effects of basement structures and Carboniferous basin configuration on evaporite distribution and the development of salt structures in Nordkapp Basin, Barents Sea-Part I

Muhammad Hassaan et al.

Summary: The study of the late Devonian-Permian development of the Nordkapp Basin in the Barents Sea utilized potential field data, reprocessed seismic profiles, and well-tied 3D seismic data to identify seven subbasins within the basin formed by inherited structures and subsequent extensional phases. The evolution of the basin was influenced by the orientation of extension and resulted in the reshaping of regional half-grabens and the formation of an interbasin transfer zone. The thickness and facies of the layered evaporite sequence in the basin were controlled by various factors, including the synrift to early postrift processes and the arrangement of structural highs.

Influence of preexisting salt diapirs during thrust wedge evolution and secondary welding: Insights from analog modeling

P. Santolaria et al.

Summary: Salt lithologies play a significant role in structural deformation, influencing folding and thrusting. The presence of precursor diapirs affects layer-parallel shortening patterns and stress distribution. Variations in salt thickness and density impact the timing and mode of fold and thrust development.

Impact of salt layers interaction on the salt flow kinematics and diapirism in the Eastern Persian Gulf, Iran: Constraints from seismic interpretation, sequential restoration, and physical modelling

Jafar Hassanpour et al.

Summary: The study uses interpretation of reflection seismic profiles, sequential restoration, and physical modelling to understand the kinematics of salt flow and diapirism in the Eastern Persian Gulf offshore Southern Iran. Salt tectonics in the area are caused by overlapping Ediacaran-Early Cambrian Hormuz Salt and Oligocene-Early Miocene Fars Salt. The flow of Fars Salt is mainly triggered by differential sedimentary loading and its lateral flow kinematics is controlled by the behavior of underlying Hormuz-Salt sheets.
