Constraints on Pluto's H and CH4 profiles from New Horizons Alice Lyα observations

G. Randall Gladstone et al.

Summary: The Alice spectrograph on New Horizons observed far-ultraviolet airglow emissions on Pluto during a flyby in July 2015. One particular observation, PColor2, provided insight into the emission lines of atomic hydrogen and the abundance profiles of H atoms and CH4 molecules in Pluto's atmosphere, which can be used to monitor seasonal climate variations remotely. The brightness of Lyman alpha emissions and the near-surface mixing ratio of CH4 on Pluto were highlighted in the study.

On the origin & thermal stability of Arrokoth's and Pluto's ices

C. M. Lisse et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the long-term nature of stable majority ices in Kuiper Belt object MU69, finding that HCN, CH3OH, and H2O ices are the most refractory. It predicts future detection of HCN or poly-H2CO based species on MU69's surface. The study also suggests that methanol ice may be ubiquitous in the outer solar system and provides insights into the formation era of MU69 and the origins of icy bodies in the solar system.

Solution to the debris disc mass problem: planetesimals are born small?

Alexander Krivov et al.

Summary: The article discusses debris belts on the periphery of planetary systems, and the potential 'mass problem' associated with bright debris discs. The simplest solution proposed is the assumption that planetesimals in systems with bright debris discs were 'born small'.

A re-assessment of the Kuiper belt size distribution for sub-kilometer objects, revealing collisional equilibrium at small sizes

A. Morbidelli et al.

Summary: In this study, the size-frequency distribution of the crater production function on Arrokoth was calculated using constraints provided by crater records and a Kuiper belt objects population model. The impact probability and slope of the crater-production function on Arrokoth were determined, along with comparisons of impact rates and velocities on different worlds in the Pluto system. The findings suggest that the size distribution of Kuiper belt objects is in collisional equilibrium.

Cometary Activity Begins at Kuiper Belt Distances: Evidence from C/2017 K2

David Jewitt et al.

Summary: Our study of the long-period comet C/2017 K2 shows that the comet continues to exhibit activity at heliocentric distances as far as 16 AU. The composition of the coma consists of submillimeter-sized and larger particles. Dust production is found to begin at a heliocentric distance of around 35 AU, while the differences in dust and gas loss rates are significant.

Refined physical parameters for Chariklo's body and rings from stellar occultations observed between 2013 and 2020

B. E. Morgado et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the ring system of Chariklo, confirming the presence of W-shaped structures within the rings and variation in radial width. The data suggest an eccentricity of the rings and allow for a more accurate determination of Chariklo's shape and size. Additionally, precise astrometric positions of Chariklo were obtained using Gaia EDR3 data.
