Solar Orbiter: Mission and spacecraft design

C. Garcia Marirrodriga et al.

Summary: The Solar Orbiter's main scientific goal is to address the central question in heliophysics: how does the Sun create and control the heliosphere? It carries ten scientific instruments towards the innermost regions of the Solar System, reaching as close as 0.28 AU from the Sun. The spacecraft's orbital inclination will be progressively increased to reach higher solar latitudes, enabling detailed studies of the polar regions of the Sun for the first time.

Direct evidence for magnetic reconnection at the boundaries of magnetic switchbacks with Parker Solar Probe

C. Froment et al.

Summary: The Parker Solar Probe's first encounters with the Sun revealed direct evidence for magnetic reconnection occurring at the boundaries of three switchbacks. The analysis showed that during magnetic reconnection, ion velocity and magnetic fields exhibit distinct changes.

Switchbacks Explained: Super-Parker Fields-The Other Side of the Sub-Parker Spiral

N. A. Schwadron et al.

Summary: The article provides a simple geometric explanation for the source of switchbacks and associated large one-sided transverse flows in the solar wind observed by the Parker Solar Probe. It explains that the magnetic field structures within rarefaction regions form sub-Parker spirals, while in regions with speed gradients, super-Parker spirals are formed, with the two behaving as opposites in function.

Automated Multi-Dataset Analysis (AMDA): An on-line database and analysis tool for heliospheric and planetary plasma data

V Genot et al.

Summary: Accessing, visualizing and analyzing heterogeneous plasma datasets has been a tedious task, hindering students and senior researchers. Providing user-friendly and versatile tools is crucial for data centres to enhance science return on data. AMDA, developed by CDPP, offers unique capabilities for educational purposes.
