Recent Advances in Geochemical Paleo-Oxybarometers

Brian Kendall

Summary: Understanding the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis, eukaryotes, metazoans, and humans on Earth is crucial for the search for complex life beyond our Solar System. The use of paleo-oxybarometers to constrain O-2 levels in the atmosphere and ocean has provided valuable insights into Earth's history. Recent advances in concepts, analysis, and modeling, along with studies on modern environments, have improved quantitative O-2 estimates and revealed a complex history of dynamic O-2 fluctuations since the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis. Further integrated approaches are needed to enhance the accuracy and robustness of atmosphere-ocean O-2 estimates.

A persistently low level of atmospheric oxygen in Earth's middle age

Xiao-Ming Liu et al.

Summary: This research reveals the evolution of atmospheric oxygen levels throughout Earth's geological history, with a particular focus on the mid-Proterozoic Eon. The results support a significant rise in atmospheric oxygen level following the Great Oxidation Event, followed by a relatively stable pO(2) of around 1% of present atmospheric level during most of the Proterozoic Eon.

Spatial heterogeneity of redox-sensitive trace metal enrichments in upper Ediacaran anoxic black shales

Chengsheng Jin et al.

Summary: This study measured and compared proxies for marine redox conditions, total organic carbon, and water mass restriction in two regions of the Nanhua Basin in South China. The results show spatial heterogeneity of RSTE enrichments in anoxic black shales during the late Ediacaran. The findings highlight the influence of local factors on RSTE enrichments and suggest the difficulty of investigating global redox conditions based on local RSTE proxies.

Orogenic quiescence in Earth's middle age

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the average thickness of active continental crust on Earth varies on billion-year time scales, with mountain-building processes closely related to nutrient cycling on Earth's surface. The formation of the Nuna-Rodinia supercontinent led to a gradual thinning of the crust, impacting ocean nutrient cycling and the evolution of life.

Carbon cycle inverse modeling suggests large changes in fractional organic burial are consistent with the carbon isotope record and may have contributed to the rise of oxygen

Joshua Krissansen-Totton et al.

Summary: The study suggests that atmospheric oxygen levels were minimal before the Great Oxidation Event, with a subsequent balance between organic burial and oxygen release leading to oxygen accumulation in the atmosphere. Analysis of carbon isotope records reveals a relative increase in organic burial rate compared to total carbon burial rate around 2.4 billion years ago, indicating a shift in oxygen source flux.

A 200-million-year delay in permanent atmospheric oxygenation

Simon W. Poulton et al.

Summary: The rise of atmospheric oxygen had a significant impact on the chemistry of surficial environments and Earth's habitability. Research indicates that atmospheric oxygen levels continued to fluctuate around 2.32 billion years ago, correlating with major perturbations in ocean redox chemistry and climate. Ultimately, permanent atmospheric oxygenation was achieved around 2.22 billion years ago, about 100 million years later than previously estimated.
