Assessment of integrated energy systems for the production and use of renewable methanol by water electrolysis and CO2 hydrogenation

Francesco Lonis et al.

Summary: The paper explores the conversion of renewable hydrogen and recycled CO2 to valuable fuels in power-to-liquids systems as a key solution to reduce CO2 emissions. Methanol is identified as a promising candidate for use as an energy carrier and chemical feedstock. Through detailed modeling and analysis of different system configurations, the overall efficiency of both systems was found to be slightly lower than 0.35.

Design and thermodynamic analysis of a novel methanol, hydrogen, and power trigeneration system based on renewable energy and flue gas carbon dioxide

Reza Nazerifard et al.

Summary: A new trigeneration system is proposed in this paper, aiming to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions and produce methanol, hydrogen, and power. Through thermodynamic analysis and parametric studies, the performance indicators and optimal operating parameters of each subsystem are determined. The results show that the system has high energy and exergy efficiencies, with the performance of the methanol synthesis reactor strongly dependent on the inlet temperature.
