Assessment of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Sound Exposure Using a Smartphone Application

Christine Capriolo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) design and environmental factors on neonatal sound exposures. The results showed that all NICUs exceeded the recommended sound level, with the highest sound exposures in the open pod format NICU. Sound exposure was influenced by NICU design, day/night shift, and other factors. The findings suggest that potentially modifiable environmental factors contribute to the high sound exposure, and a smartphone application can be useful for auditing and improving NICU noise levels.

Negative Effects of Noise on NICU Graduates' Cochlear Functions

Serdar Beken et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the adverse effects of noise on hearing, with results showing that infants hospitalized in NICU exhibited more severe hearing damage compared to healthy controls. Infants who failed the tests at 1001 Hz and 1501 Hz were found to have been exposed to noise levels above the recommended maximum level for longer periods of time.

Sensitivity and specificity of a method for diagnosis of military noise-induced hearing loss

Brian C. J. Moore et al.

Summary: The study proposed a diagnostic method for hearing loss caused by noise exposure during military service, with a sensitivity of 0.97 and specificity of 0.67. The discriminability index d' was found to be 2.3, indicating that the method can effectively distinguish between cases with and without military noise-induced hearing loss.

Summary: This study examined the performance of 102 listeners across different age groups and found that age was associated with deficits in test performance, but only one test showed larger age effects at high stimulus levels compared to low levels.

Envelope following responses predict speech-in-noise performance in normal-hearing listeners

Anita M. Mepani et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that cochlear synaptopathy, the degeneration of neural connections in the inner ear due to age or noise exposure, may significantly impact speech recognition abilities. Electrophysiological responses to certain stimuli, such as rectangular envelope modulation, show a strong correlation with word recognition performance in individuals with normal hearing sensitivity, highlighting the potential role of cochlear neural damage in speech recognition deficits.

A pilot study to assess the safety, efficacy and ease of use of a novel hearing protection device for hospitalized neonates

Michael J. Balsan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated a novel frequency-selective hearing protection device, DREAMIES, in neonates in NICU. The results showed that DREAMIES were safe, easy to use, and effective in reducing noise exposure, improving cardio-respiratory activity, and promoting sleep in neonatal patients. Further studies are needed to explore the longer term benefits of DREAMIES in infants receiving NICU care.

Summary: This review article provides an overview of Digit Triplet Tests (DTT) and digits-in-noise tests (DIN), investigating their impacts on validity, reliability, and feasibility. The research shows that the tests have high sensitivity and specificity for screening and diagnosing a wide range of populations, with potential for further improvement through procedural modifications.

Acute Recreational Noise-Induced Cochlear Synaptic Dysfunction in Humans With Normal Hearing: A Prospective Cohort Study

Qixuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the acute high-intensity recreational noise-induced effects on auditory function, particularly cochlear synaptopathy-related audiological metrics, in young adults with normal hearing. The results showed no significant impact on auditory metrics like PTA thresholds, DPOAE amplitudes, CS on TEOAEs, or MHINT SNRs post outdoor music festival noise exposure, with the exception of a decrease in ABR wave I amplitudes at 1 day post-exposure. This decrease in ABR wave I amplitudes was correlated with changes in MHINT SNR, highlighting the importance of auditory electrophysiological metrics in noise-induced cochlear synaptic dysfunction.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive overview of closed-ended otology questionnaires for adults, selecting a total of 155 unique questionnaires covering tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss, and multiple complaints. The research reveals that there are numerous questionnaires related to ear symptoms, but they primarily focus on single symptoms like hearing loss, vertigo, or tinnitus, with few covering the multiple symptoms ear diseases can generate.
