Name Changes for Fungi of Medical Importance, 2018 to 2019

Andrew M. Borman et al.

Summary: This article summarizes recent changes in nomenclature for medically important fungi from 2018 to 2019, including new species and revised names for existing ones. While many revised names have been widely adopted, names concerning common human pathogens may take longer to become generally used. New and current names are reported together to increase familiarity with the correct taxonomic classification.

Antifungal Resistance among Less Prevalent Candida Non-albicans and Other Yeasts versus Established and under Development Agents: A Literature Review

Ana Espinel-Ingroff et al.

Summary: Fungal diseases and antifungal resistance are on the rise, including those caused by rare or emerging species. Limited data is available for the susceptibility of less common Candida species, but epidemiological cutoff values (ECVs/ECOFFs) have been established to identify non-wild type isolates with known resistance mechanisms. Additional percentages of non-wild type isolates, especially for non-prevalent species, have been reported by analyzing MIC distributions in the literature.

Comparative Pharmacodynamics of Echinocandins against Aspergillus fumigatus Using an In Vitro Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic Model That Correlates with Clinical Response to Caspofungin Therapy: Is There a Place for Dose Optimization?

Maria Siopi et al.

Summary: Echinocandins have suboptimal results at standard dosing for invasive aspergillosis. Dose escalation in a validated in vitro PK/PD model showed improved efficacy against wild-type isolates. A sigmoidal PK/PD relationship was found, suggesting that caspofungin dose escalation might deserve clinical validation.
