Clinically relevant mutations in core metabolic genes confer antibiotic resistance

Allison J. Lopatkin et al.

Summary: The study discovered that Escherichia coli undergo metabolic changes when adapting to antibiotics, with some noncanonical genes implicated in antibiotic resistance. These metabolic alterations lead to decreased basal respiration, avoiding metabolic toxicity and reducing drug lethality. Additionally, some metabolism-specific mutations identified are overrepresented in the genomes of >3500 clinical E. coli pathogens, indicating clinical relevance.

Population structure and genetic diversity of non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) clinical isolates from Michigan

Heather M. Blankenship et al.

Summary: This study used whole genome sequencing to analyze 894 isolates of non-O157 STEC collected from Michigan patients between 2001 and 2018, identifying 67 serotypes and 69 multilocus sequence types. Phylogenetic analysis revealed three clades with evidence of parallel evolution and recombination, showing no specific association between clades and epidemiological data. Serotype diversity increased over time and was associated with infection, hospitalization, and clinical symptoms.
