Multi-Scale White Matter Tract Embedded Brain Finite Element Model Predicts the Location of Traumatic Diffuse Axonal Injury

Marzieh Hajiaghamemar et al.

Summary: Finite element models are increasingly used in traumatic brain injury research to predict the probability of sustaining TBI. This study focused on estimating the sites of acute traumatic axonal injury after rapid head rotation. Three axonal deformation-related metrics successfully predicted the locations of acute TAI within 2.5 mm, while brain tissue metrics did not.

A Computational Study of Liquid Shock Absorption for Prevention of Traumatic Brain Injury

Hossein Vahid Alizadeh et al.

Summary: This study proposes a potential solution to mild traumatic brain injury by designing a helmet that transmits nearly constant minimal force, and simulates its effects through computer modeling. Results show that with liquid shock absorption technology in helmet design, average brain tissue strain can be significantly reduced. This research provides an important benchmark for future helmet designs.

Player position in American football influences the magnitude of mechanical strains produced in the location of chronic traumatic encephalopathy pathology: A computational modelling study

K. A. Zimmerman et al.

Summary: The study found that player position in American football significantly influences the brain deformation within sulci after head impacts, with positions exposed to large magnitude and low frequency impacts, such as defensive backs and wide receivers, showing the highest strain and strain rate. Rotational head motion was identified as a key factor in producing large strains and strain rates in the sulci. The results suggest that player position can impact the risk of concussion and CTE, providing valuable insights for future research and prevention system design.

Instantaneous Whole-Brain Strain Estimation in Dynamic Head Impact

Kianoosh Ghazi et al.

Summary: The study successfully uses a convolutional neural network to instantly estimate the distribution of peak maximum principal strain in the entire brain, achieving a high success rate of 97.1%. When tested on an independent dataset, the predicted performance closely matches the directly simulated results and outperforms in predicting concussions. This technique has the potential to accelerate traumatic brain injury research and transform the design and testing standards of head protective gears.

Identifying degenerative effects of repetitive head trauma with neuroimaging: a clinically-oriented review

Breton M. Asken et al.

Summary: Varying severities and frequencies of head trauma can lead to dynamic acute and chronic pathophysiologic responses in the brain, attracting more attention. Studying neuroimaging data from repetitive head trauma cohorts can help improve the diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Structural MRI and PET imaging may be helpful in differential diagnosis, but there is currently no clear metabolic or molecular pattern associated with repetitive head trauma.

The relationship between brain injury criteria and brain strain across different types of head impacts can be different

Xianghao Zhan et al.

Summary: This study found that using the same BIC value across different head impact types may lead to different brain strains, indicating significant differences between brain strain and BIC. The accuracy of brain strain regression generally decreases when the BIC regression models are fitted to datasets with different types of head impact.
