Advances in understanding and in multi-disciplinary methodology used to assess lipid regulation of signalling cascades from the cancer cell plasma membrane

C. Soteriou et al.

Summary: The lipid bilayer is crucial for cell signalling and undergoes changes during oncogenic transformation. Studying the role of the cell membrane in cell signalling is challenging due to technical limitations, but combining computational, wet-lab, and semi-dry approaches offers the best solutions. Various analytical tools like computational microscopy, biological assays, and membrane biophysics are used to study cell signalling initiation from cancer cell membranes and explore potential cancer therapies involving membrane-modulating agents.

Apocryphal FADS2 activity promotes fatty acid diversification in cancer

Reuben S. E. Young et al.

Summary: Canonical fatty acid metabolism describes specific enzyme-substrate interactions resulting in well-defined products. Profiling of lipids in prostate cancer cell lines revealed unusual unsaturated fatty acids not described by canonical pathways. Direct desaturation of fatty acids by FADS2 generated new unsaturated fatty acid families rarely reported in human-derived cells, with functional roles in membrane structure and signaling.
