Nasopharyngeal Microbiota Profiles in Rural Venezuelan Children Are Associated With Respiratory and Gastrointestinal Infections

Lilly M. Verhagen et al.

Summary: Recent research suggests that microbiota plays a role in susceptibility to respiratory tract infections and gastrointestinal infections. The nasopharyngeal microbiota of rural Venezuelan children includes bacteria typical of tropical climates, with some similarities and differences compared to developed regions.

Metatranscriptomic Characterization of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Identified a Host Transcriptional Classifier Associated With Immune Signaling

Haocheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the metatranscriptomic characteristics of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 pneumonia patients, revealing that COVID-19 patients have a disrupted airway microbiome with reduced alpha diversity, potential pathogenic microbes, and a unique immune-associated host transcriptional signature that could improve diagnosis and indicate disease severity.

Risk factors for Covid-19 severity and fatality: a structured literature review

Dominik Wolff et al.

Summary: A systematic literature review on the risk factors of severe and fatal Covid-19 courses shows that conditions and comorbidities related to poor health status, high age, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension are risk factors for severe and fatal disease courses. Additionally, organ damage and coagulation dysfunctions are associated with severe and fatal courses of the disease.

Gut microbiota composition reflects disease severity and dysfunctional immune responses in patients with COVID-19

Yun Kit Yeoh et al.

Summary: This study found that the gut microbiome composition was significantly altered in patients with COVID-19 compared to non-COVID-19 individuals, regardless of medication received. Certain gut commensals known for their immunomodulatory potential were underrepresented in patients and remained low even after disease resolution. Additionally, the altered gut microbiome composition correlated with disease severity and elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines and blood markers.

Temporal association between human upper respiratory and gut bacterial microbiomes during the course of COVID-19 in adults

Rong Xu et al.

Summary: This study conducted longitudinal analyses of throat and anal microbiomes in 35 COVID-19 patients and 19 healthy controls. Results showed lower bacterial diversity in COVID-19 patients, but observed a synchronous restoration of upper respiratory and gut microbiomes in some mild patients.
