From pollen dispersal to plant diversification: genetic consequences of pollination mode

Carolyn A. Wessinger

Summary: Pollinators influence patterns of plant speciation by affecting pollen dispersal rates, which in turn impact population structure and rates of species formation.

Geographic Mosaics of Fly Pollinators With Divergent Color Preferences Drive Landscape-Scale Structuring of Flower Color in Daisy Communities

Allan G. Ellis et al.

Summary: The variation in flower color within and across Angiosperm species is attributed to divergent selection due to geographic mosaics of pollinators with different color preferences. In Namaqualand, South Africa, shifts between orange and white-flowered daisy communities are driven by the innate color preferences of different pollinators, with bee-fly pollinators strongly associated with specific flower colors. Despite the generalist phenotypes of daisies, the flower color turnover across Namaqua daisy communities is likely shaped by a geographic mosaic of bee-fly pollinators with divergent color preferences.

Phylogenomic conflict coincides with rapid morphological innovation

Caroline Parins-Fukuchi et al.

Summary: Evolutionary biologists have found that gene-tree conflict, often caused by population-level processes, is rampant during the origin of major lineages. This conflict-rich regions of clades also tend to experience the highest rates of phenotypic innovation, suggesting a direct correspondence between instances of high conflict and elevated rates of phenotypic innovation.

On the potential of Angiosperms353 for population genomic studies

Madeline Slimp et al.

Summary: The study utilized the Angiosperms353 probe set to sequence plant specimens from Texas, demonstrating that these markers contain sufficient variation for population genetic analysis, allowing for estimation of nucleotide diversity. High heterozygosity was observed in many species when a subset of variants was filtered to reduce linkage, suggesting the potential for estimating gene flow and population dynamics with denser sampling within species.

Paralogs and Off-Target Sequences Improve Phylogenetic Resolution in a Densely Sampled Study of the Breadfruit Genus (Artocarpus, Moraceae)

Elliot M. Gardner et al.

Summary: The study constructed a 517-gene phylogenetic framework for the breadfruit genus Artocarpus using silica-dried leaves from recent fieldwork and herbarium specimens with 96% taxon sampling. Including flanking noncoding sequence in analyses significantly improved resolution of gene trees, while increasing data set size increased convergence between analysis methods but did not reduce gene-tree conflict. The study also optimized the sequence assembly pipeline for short sequences from degraded DNA extracted from museum specimens.
