Rehabilitation practices in cocoa agroforestry systems mitigate outbreaks of termites and support cocoa tree development and yield

Christian T. L. Djuideu et al.

Summary: The study found that farm rehabilitation practices are associated with high beta diversity of shade trees and linked with a high diversity of beneficial termite species. Rehabilitation pruning is a suitable practice to rejuvenate aging trees and increase short-term cocoa yield while mitigating the negative effects of insect pests such as termites.

A conceptual framework and experimental design for analysing the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) in agroforestry systems

Julia Schwarz et al.

Summary: There is compelling evidence that plant diversity has positive effects on the functioning of forests and agroecosystems, but there is still limited knowledge on BEF relationships in agroforestry systems. Therefore, new experimental designs are being developed to advance understanding of the role of biodiversity in these systems.

Upper canopy tree crown architecture and its implications for shade in cocoa agroforestry systems in the Western Region of Ghana

Winston Adams Asante et al.

Summary: This study investigated the crown architecture of upper canopy trees in cocoa agroforestry systems and found that spreading to cylindrical and elongate crown forms were most effective in providing shade for cocoa trees. The study provides important insights for selecting and managing upper canopy tree species in cocoa agroforestry systems to promote climate-smart cocoa production in Ghana and the West African cocoa belt.
